THE RE-BUILT SHELL.BY STEVEN BENSON

The erstwhile spectral house nears (re) completion: double glazed windows are installed; the scaffolding is half down, the brickwork cleaned. The former denizens’ beautiful garden is WIPED OUT. Who will live there shortly?

It will not be the former mix of the indigent and /or Bohemian; but a melee of rich Tories and champagne Socialists(at least they ARE socialists) as “Signifying Living” rejig the jigsaw that is the fourteen flat mansion; reputedly, there will be a “penthouse” on the fourth floor.

Of course they will have their own future stories as the former dwellers had their PAST ones; but they do not really interest me

………………………………………………….

HOWEVER, the house further down the road (past the burnt-out, third derelict one), is still intriguing and retains an air of semi-desuetude, despite its very halfhearted repair transmogrifications! There is a caravan in the front yard; as piecemeal, cowboy-looking repairs are effected gradually; but the huge, rambling house retains its air of part derelict, struggling-to-hold-together charm; it’s still a psychogeographical monument and, thus, metaphor. Does anyone actually LIVE in the house itself (yet)?. Higgledy-piggledy ladders, rhizomes off the tubers of already haphazard scaffolding(is that actually safe?), linked like a wrongly assembled jigsaw. Looks VERY precarious.{This is OBSERVATION and faction or just fiction; not necessarily truth! The house  MIGHT be very safe! Anyway, I have not identified the house!}

————————————-

the following is DEFINITELY fiction:

“He bought the decaying house for a knock- price; it had dry rot, the porch roof was leaking, with tiles missing; there was a general air of dusty/fusty/musty disuse. The latest landlord had died; and all but one of the tenants had been on short-term leases; leaving one gloriously intransigent secure tenant(pre 1988 tenancy) in one, top floor flat, which remained defiantly tenanted throughout the sale and “renovations”; at one stage, it was lit at night, even behind the locked, temporary plyboard front “door”! The new landlord, in search of a quick buck on substandard assured shorthold tenancies, performed(that being the apposite word, as it was like a magician’s act of smoke and mirrors) a hodgepodge of these makeshift “repairs”.

——————————————-

So, this tenant(of flat 9), aged 86, trudged up 6 flights of stairs daily, past rubble; he struggled with these endless stairs but it was, and it remained, his home; he would not move. The local, ineffectual Environmental Health department did not attempt to force him out, merely attempting the new landlord to do some derisory “improvements”. So. he stayed on… and on… in this perilous geographical,physical and (spectral)psychological state, his decay mirroring back that of the house itself.”
