THE ELEPHANT.WRITING EXERCISE(MULTI-GENRE)WORDCOUNT.BY STEVEN BENSON. FOR LGBT CREATIVE WRITING GROUP, MERSEYSIDE

The poor elephant, LUMBERED with all the baggage of metaphorical, allegorical, symbolic resonances, as we negotiate its colossal labarynth of meanings and figurative extensions of meanings.

He just wants to get on with his life but is encumbered with conceits like:

1.the Chernobyl reactor “elephant’s foot” of radioactive material, beneath the deracinated power plant: fatal radiation.

2.by W G Sebald’s appropriation of it (though it is probably I who am using the actual, very loose translation of monumental as “elephantine”!) to represent  gargantuan, outsize building which “contain the elements of their own destruction” (Sebald) in their sheer giganticism and, thus, unmaintainability( cf Tempelhof Airport or the {half-}desuetudinous vast houses of Livingston Drive Liverpool, where I live).

3. Phrases like “the elephant in the room”: the all to obvious subject/object/entity that dare not speak its name !:).

4. “Elephants never forget”: why ? cos they are big, live longer??? are supra-wise??

My house is elephantine: reclaim that adjective; it’s a queer one!:P.It lumbers; it barely holds its own weight (of contorted, jigsaw design; false ceilings and crawl spaces, betwixt floors of randomly scattered apartments). It’s so large, it hardly coheres. I am REALLY exploiting the metaphorical risability of elephant(ine) here. But that’s what writers do, don’t they?.

But what about elephant rights? I am not being facetious: isn’t the poor elephant the most anthropomorphicized animal?
