THE DECAYED HOUSE IN THE DERELICT STREET.PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY. BY STEVEN BENSON

A jigsaw of super-imposed accretions of quirky flats

A jigsaw of super-imposed accretions of quirky flats

He/I passed this house, almost daily. It exerted an eerie fascination; uncanny. A house divided and re-divided into countless apartments:like some strange jigsaw puzzle. How many? 15 flats? The house was gargantuan. He/I could see into it, as embryo redevelopment started; stairs, haphazardly, WITHIN units; flats where the entrance was “via the garden”, with a locked, closed off door showing this had not always been so.

This one had its own front door

Of what nature WAS the uncanny fascination? He/I invented this story….

Paul had lived in the house 23 years;it had steadily, creepingly so, become a jumble of more and more apartments, with no rhyme nor reason to their higgledy-piggledy arrangement; two-level flats jutting out into bedsits, flats seemingly above each other which actually weren’t; false ceilings; bricked up doors and former entrances, ways into flats (added later) at the back of the house. As time went on, and as the building began to become more and more decomposed and random, he felt more and more uneasy, as if the whole building would collapse under its own weight of formlessness, disrepair and haphazard nature. Different landlords bought the house; and further excrescences were added without essential structural repairs being done.

Eventually, he became the sole remaining tenant, located in the basement; he sensed, like some Usher-esque story, the weight of the now empty house above him, crushing him; he both wanted to escape and didnt; or rather felt trapped in a kind of psychogeographical co-dependency with the house.
