MANAGING THE THE DISCONTINUITIES AND POSITIONALITIES OF LGBTQ EXPERIENCE. BY STEVEN BENSON.

There are :

1.Lgbt people who want to know about their inheritance/the fight for equal legal rights; possibly, even to theorize about it!

2.Lgbt people/queers who want to go BEYOND the lgbt/queer binary and explore lgbt studies/history AND Queer Theory.

3.Queer theorists who believe the gay/straight binary is wholly emptied out, a remnant. They ONLY want to explore Queer Theory and other anti-hegemonic theories;

————————–

and conversely:

1.lgbt people who have come through an (often)indescribably painful process of self-acceptance(and, possibly, engagement with mainstream society as an openly lgbt person) via societal homophobia and heterosexism which has been internalised and acted out into hetero-hegemonic role playing(eg have married those of the opposite sex, “straight-acting”; I am NOT judging them-I  have been there myself-it is a way of coping); but who HAVE worked through (most-its neverending) of it and come out(in both senses!) on the other side. However, understandably, these people may not wish to be reminded of that indubitably painful struggle, by being presented with the battles for lgbt equality or lgbt studies; much less the (perceived as  extra )”layer” of Queer Theory.

2.A scary group, with whom I have very little sympathy, and VERY DIFFERENT from 1. (immediately above), I stress: the HOMO-HOMOPHOBES, controversially sometimes nomenclatured as “faggots who hate other faggots”{faggot isn’t MY favourite word, reclaim it tho one might attempt!), whose self-loathing as gay, lesbian or bisexual is turned OUTWARDS and projected upon openly lgbt, (especially queer and transgender) people, or against the ones who have at least TRIED to work through societal homophobia and its concomitant: internalized SELF-oppression, whereas THEY have not worked it through. This projection is often against lgbtq people who won’t “keep quiet” about being lgbtq, who are allegedly “always going on about it” or, (disingenuously or not),perceived as “one issue lgtbt people”(though they usually have a RANGE of interests, like ANY human being):leading to subtle verbal put-downs, attempts at suppression of these openly lgbt people or, at times, downright overt homophobia. An especially vulnerable target group for these unpleasant types of people is lgbtq people who are interested in CELEBRATING their rich and VARIED culture, which is portrayed as separatist(when it usually isn’t anyway; and so what if it is :ATTITUDE lol).

——————————————-

These 5 loose groupings-and the boundaries are of course FLUID(we all inhabit various positionalities simultaneously or one after the other, in a heterosexistly divide and rule world)- are the end result of society’s marginalisation, (till recently, in the UK anyway)demonization and more or less invisibilization of lgbtq people(whether conscious or intentional). It is a sad fact; attitudes in the UK, and some other countries,ARE gradually improving; in other others, they seem to be going backwards(Uganda, Russia and MANY others).

Now it is upto US, as lgbtq people who are , first and foremost , HUMAN BEINGS, legally and morally entitled to the same, full legal rights as everyone else(AND full social respect, sans apologetics):-it is upto US, with our non lgbt allies, to FREE OURSELVES… if we want to!

That we Do manage, AT ALL, to straddle these discontinuities of self and liminal(sometimes necessarily chameleonic)areas/arenas is a massive tribute to 1. our endurance.2 to our non lgbt allies.
