THOUGHTS AND LINKS:INTRA-DIALOGICALITY; THE CONSTRUCTION OF MASCULINITY;FEMININE ECRITURE AND ECRITURE CUIR; AND “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS”(USED PEJORATIVELY).BY STEVEN BENSON

Where to start?

Events and books prompt

these thoughts/links; and reading

“In One Person”(Irving, 2012).

……………………………………

To define:

1.INTRA-DIALOGICALITY. The internal dialogue, in each of us-sometimes leading to cognitive dissonance, sometimes an acceptance of the different strands of the self/selves- a dialogue BETWEEN our inner (sub) selves,( vying for precedence sometimes). Thus, Billy, in “In One Person”,somehow lives with(?intergrates; eventually perhaps) his bisexuality, love of male to female transgender people, and wrestling, after having endured the travails of decades of heternormative and hetero-hegemonic policing and societally propounded gender binarisation.

……………………………………..

2. THE (SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION)OF MASCULINITY.

“Male” as equating to strong, the provider, not too gay/”effeminate”/camp, for example.  “Effeminancy” is the real give-away here: thus strongly implying that the feminine/”feminine” is inferior if to be “effeminate” is to be weak. The social/political/cultural construction of “masculinity” works at ALL levels throughout society(as hegemonically constructed); levels both micro and macro-cosmic. It is manifest in insecurity and fear around difference/otherness(in many ways,; perhaps particularly around sexual orientation and gender fluidity, for reasons I have explored elsewhere). Macrocosmically, it leads to defence of territory, literal and metaphorical, and, thus, to wars, devolving/sublimating itself into literal land disputes and excessive nationalism(in lieu of a secure personal identity)-in some cases(…Putin…).

3. FEMININE ECRITURE. In response, Helene Cixous and others,in their feminine ecriture had to INVENT/HAUL- from their inner, societally repressed womanhood and female sensuality-a new language, solely relective of womens’ experience:”Woman must write herself…bring women to writing..Woman must put herself into the text”(“Laugh of the Medusa”, 1976). This is a necessary antidote-a necessarily revolutionary one- to the male (hetero) patriarchy; in this instance-one of many, historically-the white, straight male canon of what is constituted as “literature”(with its dearth, till fairly recently, of women writers who either did not feel able to use their own name, but adopted a psueudonymous male one, or who didn’t feel able to write of issues relevant to women)

4. ECRITURE CUIR/QUEER; LGBT WRITING.

Dr. Christopher Madden has refered to “male to male consciousness”(conversation with myself, 2014): ie., SENSUALLY uninhibited writing in gay male/queer writing/literature, similarly(to Feminine Ecriture) re-claiming our marginalised and invisibilised, sensual male to male sensual self/selves, stifled for so long by similarly repressive hetero-hegemonic and heteronormative forces; the same applies to female to female sensual writing or transgender-content writing(like the marvellous love scenes between Billy and Miss Frost in the mould-breaking Irving novel; an example of male to male consciousness/ecriture cuir is Neil Bartlett, especially in his psychogeogrpahically rich world of “Ready to catch Him Should he Fall”, written as early as 1990). Also, David Leavitt, Michael Cunningham, and, of course, the indefatigable Edmund White; and, as effective as Irving on gender fluidity and sexual orientation differences,Patrick White’s “The Twyborn Affair”https://towardsutopia.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/patrick-whitethe-twyborn-affair/.

So, lgbt/queer writing and womens’ writing, away from the straight/straight-acting corset of the dominant, controlling values of countless(though not all) societies, handed down from era to era ; and only recently, in this and some other more liberal countries, beginning to be challenged. In Cixoux and Bartlett et all, sex and sensuality between woman and man(when it is equal), between female and female , between two men, between transgender and transgender, between transgender and non-transgender:all is described unapologetically and is written back, overtly, into history. And, yes, I said sex; gay/queer sex…

5.”POLITICAL CORRECTNESS”

I am about to attend a debate on whether political correctness{NO quotation marks} strangulates free speech. This phrase is much ill-used and abused, and is often used pejoratively, because of the fears of the hegemonic majority(or those who perceive themselves as such, because of their power)-fear of a black/queer/womens/planet: depressingly familiar.

The pejorative useage of the contested phrase is a favourite tool of the (socially)illiberal and oppressive Right; people who want the status quo , who are afraid and hate immigrants, lgbt people, benefit claimants and anyone else they can lay their pathetic projections and insecurities on. These are people VERY afraid of the rights of women, lgbt, racial minorities; even, for some TOTALLY unfathomable reason of sick and disabled people. Like the masculinists, they are the most insecure, frightened people. Political correctness ACTUALLY means equal opportunities, and non-discrimation, for minority groups; but it has now, almost completely, become nothing but LOADED and negative and disingenuously used, especially as a “concept” that, ALLEGEDLY,stultifies free speech, where free speech can only be truly free if it respects the rights of others to be treated equally(as long as no-one is harming anyone else). So there is a clear line between free speech and bigotry, insensitivity and plain offensiveness.

So to try and link these definitions(threads): intra-dialogicality leads to avoidance of a war within the self by accepting the concomitant, internal selves; so that the clinging to a restricting, often sexist view of what masculinity is is not upheld but challenged(though we can go further , to psychological androgyny and get rid of these socially imposed gender identities and constructions anyway, going for Irving’s “gender mutability”; that is a real way ahead!)We need to forge ahead, constructing, for ourselves, alternative formations of queer/female/black writing, with which we are at one and fulfilled; this is not seperatism:it is re-claiming our(marginalised) world; and lets get away from these tiresome debates about “Do we still need feminism?”, “Is the time right for same-sex marriage”, BECAUSE-isn’t it obvious/- to have  debate on whether the time was right to ban mixed race marriages or bring back apartheid would be offensive, beyond words. Moving beyond such “debates” is not trampling on free speech: it is giving ALL human beings the rights that , as long as they do not harm others, they all deserve. Lets move on….
