THE NEW CENTRAL LIBARY LIVERPOOL.IMPRESSIONS,RAMBLINGS, AND MORE LINKS/INTRA-TEXTUALITIES.BY STEVEN BENSON

I got there.. the half new, half-renovated Liverpool Central Libary, rescued from its desuetudinous former incarnation to some slightly uncomfortable in-between land of learning and entertainment; or NO; that is aN unnecessary and un-called for binary/dialectic. That is MY libary of baggage: entertainment and learning are not incommensurate.

The vertiginous staircase, climbing into a Midland Hotel(St. Pancras station) style apogee of stars(or seeming so); a rooftop view and a cafe; ok,  the latter was of the capitalist, syndicated  variety but a good basis to work from: for  someone, like myself, with limited mobility; somewhere I could leave my bag and remnants of drink/food and make slightly furtive forays into the classical cd collection(small!) and even upto the top; and down the cascading stairs, like a Liberace performance of Chopin,to the European Lit and literary crit/theory sections, which exhibited some useful tomes of continental literary theory(though lgbt/queer theory was notably absent).

Was it a libary of dreams? well, yes, in significant ways:I took my own books(omg, not Edelman again?-yes, { am still hanging in there amidst excitement and frustration!}); I could therefore reclaim the space for Queer Theory; and yes, in the sense that I felt I also re-claimed an (offcial) library NOT as a place of horror-inducing panic attacks, (because/where I sublimated my sexual orientation into unremitting study, as of yore),but as a place of wholeness, learning for the WHOLE person that I am, not just the mind; the books I glanced at, and rifled through, I could IMMEDIATELY(now, not THEN , in those dark times)SENSE, not think, were ones that would re-inforce my sense of self instead of attack it(eg continental critical theory not liberal humanist, retricting “close-reading” of texts), books which (re)introduced the subject (ME, the reader/the writer/the creator of subjective constructs) back into the process:a true dialogicality between reader/collector and writer; sender of the message and RECEIVER of the message: the author is (semi, in my opinion)dead but the reader lives and burgeons. Thus, I chose a book on “Difference”,Benjamin’s microwritings, Roland Barthes, “Proust’s Overcoat” and that impulse choice I can’t remember, at this juncture; but I/ME CHOSE them; they were not dictated FOR me by some prescriptive and restrictive hegemonic, heterosexist(and sometimes downright homophobic) literary tradition/grand narrative…

The author is (?half) dead.. long live the library
