UNHEIMLICHE HEIMAT(“unHOMELY/UNCANNY HOME”)

Sebald’s

Uncanny

Unhomely

Home;

Made up of a returning

AND a turning away

Sebald’s “Dr.K”,

EMBRACING

His same-sex affect;

Then

The returning

To the comfort

Of his heterosexuality

As constructed

By society….

For ME,

Being gay

IS Home.

But for the

sebaldian narrator

it is scary.

Literally

A Freudian

Definition of

The Uncanny:

Recognising

Something

Within Oneself

Which unsettles;

Where one MAY

Have been before

But which one MAY wish

To escape

………………………………………………………….

But

When i go to

Laurieston

It IS a home;

it is NOT a

Wandering around

In a

Displaced Search

For Home;

It IS Heimat/Home.

There ARE homely homes.

Aberystwyth too;

Lark Lane and

Bold Street

    Thanks, Steve. So much longing in the poem, so sweet.

    I confess I’ve never heard the word “homely” used in this way and googled for a definition. Quite obviously I need to get out more — far away from home. (A trip with stops at Liverpool, Laurieston, and Aberystwyth might be just the ticket.)
