TOWARDS UTOPIA, INDEED: TO WENDY MOFFAT:E.M.FORSTER, A NEW LIFE

You revealed, Wendy, Forster’s not so secret life, which informs, but does not solely determine, his writings;revealed his true passions, loves and commitment towards democratic reform of homophobic and other repressive laws. You revealed how Rickie Elliott is a partly unformed prototype of the later Maurice, you revealed why Forster couldnt write, in public, anything after”Howards End” till he had got out of his system what mattered most to him: a novel where same-sex love does not have a tragic ending, (to satisfy the discriminatory whims of a largely homophobic society){“Maurice”}; and how he then carried on writing short stories of homoerotic desire; and then was finally able to write “Passage to India”. Though without the close textual analysis of Arthur Martland(Gay mens Press/Millivres, 1999)in “Forster: the Passion and the Prose”, you have brought the FULL TRUTH to his readers and admirers, with  no accusation of a manufactured “agenda” possible because you are a woman academic not a”niche” gay man writer and publisher. Most important of all, you revealed how Forster had, for the most part, after inititially fighting against the forces of the criminalisation of homosexuality, and the concomitant censorship of it, a happy, fulfilled life; (and enjoyed his last orgasm at eighty-five!!)How he was loved by Bob Buckingham and Buckingham’s wife, Mary. And yes, this IS all relevant to his work, because, as you and Martland point out, he COULDNT work after “Howard’s End” so there would have been NO more(significant) work if he hadnt ackowledged his sexual orientation. It was , by NO means, his whole identity, but it was something he had to integrate within him to be true to himself; and it made him a better writer because it led to “Passage to India”. And you used, hitherto unreleased PRIMARY sources, eg the Sex Diaries; this leaving us in no doubt that this is NOT a “modern projection” onto an older writer, but the nearest to the truth ANYone can get in a biography. YOU, Wendy, like Arthur Martland 11 years ago, connected the “passion and prose” and DID “{only} connect”(quotations from “Howard’s End” itself.)the beautiful life-enhancing irony of which I am sure Forster himself would have been proud of! because he dedicated “Maurice” TO a “better time”. Thank you.
